I went into The Limes at Bilsthorpe today and the owner asked if he could have a word with me.
He has a bit of a problem with some of the riders who go on Saturdays and doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t want to cause a fuss and he likes to see cyclists using his cafe as they have for many years. However, in bad weather some riders are dripping wet and covered in mud (no doubt those who ride without mudguards are the worst). They leave the seats wet and muddy.
The cafe has spent a lot of money on refurbishment and built up a good trade with people coming in for lunch and it makes it difficult to maintain this trade if they have to sit on wet and muddy seats.
He also doesn’t like to see riders consuming their own food, as some still do, but he has turned a blind eye to this to avoid any confrontation. (He says there are a few who are “cantankerous” so he has held back from saying anything to them.)
He says one rider was more considerate the other week and asked for some newspaper to sit on.
We don’t want to see cyclists refused service but unless more consideration is given this may happen.
If you are using the cafe please show some consideration and if you are really wet and muddy it may be best to not stop or not sit down or at least ask for some newspaper to sit on. He did suggest riders ought to carry a bin liner or something to sit on – I can’t see this working though!
At one time The Limes was a basic transport cafe and I’ve seen riders in the past, doing things like wringing out gloves onto the floor! Just show some respect and though for the staff and other customers.
Sorry to go on so long but we want to keep this venue and keep everyone happy and not spoil it by the unthinking behaviour of a few.
