VCLE (LONG EATON) RELIABILITY RIDES 2013
Sunday 3rd February - Warren Lane Sawley Marina - 09.15 for 09.30 start
Route sheet and Risk Assessments on VCLE website http://www.vclongeaton.com/
Copy of email sent to local Club Secretaries
For some time officials and members of VCLE have held concerns for rider safety, the position of VCLE and the continued use of the long established route for the Long Eaton Reliability Ride. Our concerns are that to continue using the existing Reliability route may place VCLE in a position whereby it may be accused of behaving irresponsibly and of subjecting riders to unnecessary danger, a situation that cannot continue.
Rationale for Change
It is acknowledged that the VCLE Reliability Ride is entrenched in local cycling folklore. Any change to the existing route is, understandably, likely to be met by some resistance and reluctance by those who, for whatever reason, are resistant to change. It is many years since the existing Reliability Ride route was established and over the years the Reliability Ride has seen only minor revisions to cope with upgrading of local roads. However, it is with these changes to local roads, the subsequent and incremental increase in road traffic over those roads and the corresponding risk to riders that the changes have been made. The new route endeavours, where feasible, to keep riders off dual carriageways and Trunk roads and avoid hazardous roundabouts.
Traditional Reliability Route
The traditional Reliability route from the centre of Long Eaton covered a distance of 65.5 miles (106k) and included a total ascent of around 4,100 feet (1,250mtrs) over that distance. The notable climbs were leaving Ashbourne town, Fenny Bentley, Biggin and Little Eaton Bank with the Via Gellia providing the major descent.
New Reliability Route
The new Reliability route now leaves from Sawley Marina entrance in Warren Lane and provides a distance of 69.5 miles (112k) and an overall ascent of around 4020ft (1,223mtrs) over the distance. There are several cafes along the route where refreshments may be obtained. The new Reliability Ride route outline is as follows:
Depart from Sawley Marina/Plank & Leggit – Shardlow – Aston – Weston – Swarkestone – Willington – Hilton – Hatton – Longford – Alkmonton – Yeaveley – Wyaston - Asbourne – Fenny Bentley – Longcliffe – Grangemill – Cromford – Whatstandwell – Ambergate – Belper – M i l f o r d – Makeney - Holbrook – Coxbench – Morley – Spondon – Ockbrook – Draycott – Sawley Marina
The new Reliability Ride route has been considered and accepted by officials and members of VCLE and addresses the safety issues that were inherent in the traditional route. The new Reliability Ride has been devised so as to retain the basic essence of terrain, distance and challenge of the traditional Reliability Ride route. A quieter route to Ashbourne where it retains the hill leaving Ashbourne and now includes the classic ‘testing climb’ to Longcliffe. It retains the sweeping descent of the lower four mile section of the Via Gellia from Grangemill to Cromford and the return along the A6 to *CENSORED*. The route then takes in the climb from Makeney to Holbrooke with the final climb of the route being Sandy Lane from Coxbench to Morley Smithy.
In the end there will always be those riders who, even on the reliability ride will choose to 'do their own thing' and ride whatever route they desire, that's acknowledged, there's nothing we can do about that. The overwhelming objective in all of this is to ensure the VCLE Reliability Ride is as safe as we can reasonably make it and demonstrate that VCLE is acting responsibly and with due diligence towards those who wish to participate.
The new Reliability Route map may be accessed on VCLE website, route sheets will be available on the day and route signs will be in place on the day.
Please note, the shorter (40 miles) Reliability Ride is unaffected.
Thanks, have a good Christmas and keep safe.
