over 2 monthes ago in august i went to belgium to race/train and caught a cold/virus. i was at the top of my game then and got 6th in a bunch sprint in the kermesse i rode in belgium. but the cold i got from it basically ruined the rest of my season. i carried on racing for a month after i felt that id lost the cold but it seemed to allways just about still be there. about a month ago it got worse again and i now reckon that the cold/virus triggered some kind of allergy. i entered tha nat HC even though i was feeling sh1te; because i wanted to do well in my last goal of the season. sunday b4 last i decided i couldnt be bothered to rest any longer as it wasnt doing any good and went out on me bike. i felt worse than id ever been on bike b4. i was obviously pretty weak and unfit bcus of the month off the bike but my lungs felt terrible. since then iv been to the doctor n had a very quick diagnosis of astma( alltho didnt have ne tests or anything and i think the dr just wanted 2 get rid of me. i will be goin back an insist i av al tha tests done). but it seemed to have made me lungs feel better anyway. i also cleaned all tha dust n sh1ite out me room n stuff.
but anyway heres me dilemma. went out on me bike again on monday. felt a lot better but lungs still hurt. i felt pretty weak most the time but the 1 thing i did notice that uphills i didnt feelso bad. iv lost my kick completely but nevertheless didnt feel so bad. went out today again and again felt quite an improvement. me legs were felin stronger and my lungs have me little hassle compared to the first time i got bk on the bike. i rode up forhill which i can do at my best can do it 2.55 ish going 90% and did it today at 90% in under 3.20 i reckon. i had thought the idea of ridin the nat HC a week ago would be stupid but now im not so sure. i want to ride it but on the other hand i wanted to do it in the first place to show how i could compare in national event. what should i do?? |

unless you can say hand on heart you are 100% well , dont ride
you will turn up & give it everything to finish where ??
i think you might be young enough to have another chance to ride it
it could set you back weeks & set your winter training back _________________ little fluffy clouds...... |

I'd concentrate on your punctuation and grammar first. _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |

Do not ride!
Ask yourself what are you likely to achieve. And also what are the likely effects of riding if you are not better.
Anyway. You can more or less blag a road race. You can't blag a hill climb. _________________ Coffee wins! |

It's only 900m, but it's a very severe 900m. It would hurt anybody's lungs never mind someone who's lungs hurt already. My advice would be not to ride and have a good rest, and make sure you feel well before starting training again. You've got plenty of years ahead of you to ride the National Hill Climb. It's not worth jeopardising your future just for one race. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Matteomjb |

I'm with 1980s fashion victim.
Don't do it. Get well. Get healthy then start thinking about next year.
If you were paying for the petrol to go up there you'd know it wass gonna cost you 50 quid or more (by the time you include food and drinks etc) to either go badly, or go really badly, or make yourself really poorly.
Kill your season, get well, and build back up gently with base work after a few weeks total break. This is one time of year when you can have complete time off. |

Pack the season in now and recover. There's plenty of time before next season.
I'm not advising you here, I'm telling you. Don't even go near the Rake unless you are in tip-top condition. I used to live near there and have been up it hundreds of times. It not only hurts your legs with lactic, it tears your lungs to pieces as well. _________________ 't Ros Beijaart.

whatever iv got it doesnt show many signs of leaving but if i stop training im just going to get less and less fit. but i aint going to do the nat HC. i think that 'the rake' is a bit overrated tho. what is its average gradient? i ride a lot in mid wales and there quite a few 900 metre hills up tiny lanes to farms n stuff there that are 20% average. what makes it so special? :S |

yeah, that sounds very good advice, I agree with all of you, I'll not ride ....... heck what am i saying, I'm not ill, i have no choice but to ride. 900m up an average of 1 in whatever might seem over rated, but it is as hard as you make it. How many of those climbs in Welsh farm lanes do you go 110% flat out effort and can hardly do another pedal rev when you get to the top, taking 2 or 3 days to recover? For me none, this was something Jim told me a while back to show how much he can hurt himself in hc's |
