Am I the only person who thinks he's wasted his talent by not crossing the channel and mixing it with the big boys? _________________ "I'm on a whisky di3t.....I've lost 2 days already" Tommy Cooper |

who knows. you could be right, however he could have been merely a mediocre road man on the continent instead of a top domestic rider here, as well as a world class track rider.
what is it they say about it being better a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big one? _________________ Team VeloRiders- like Rock Racing, only far more perverted. |

Not exactlt done bad staying over here though has he??? How many world/olympic/commonwealth medals has he got?
Could I suggest your question is arguably should he have seen how far he could have gone on the road ratgher than "only" ridse the track? |

From memory he made a concious decision to stay in the UK which is his choice and fair play to him. _________________ Blame me for robbing Peter but don't you blame Paul |

But I thought you thought it appropriate to impose your choice on others? _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |

Yes, I always think it odd that he stayed here to ride Premiers, which I thought were a stepping stone for riders. But what do I know?! |

Sure i read somewhere about him getting more from being on the plan and riding for a British team than if he went to a small foriegn based team _________________ http://twitter.com/Si_Wilson |

Doesn't take long.
Next time you're chasing Dernys at Maindy I'll show you the tricks of the trade. More Wizard's sleeves than the new Harry Potter flick. |

affaic, cycling is a hard sport where ever you race, so if you can make money dishing out kickings rather than receiving them, i can see nothing wrong with that, and that's just waht Chris has done isn't it? _________________ Team VeloRiders- like Rock Racing, only far more perverted. |

He's also more likely to get a decent (or some kind of) job in cycling in the UK after being a domestic big hitter with Olympic and Commonwealth medals, rather than from being a decent rider in a non pro tour team on the continent with no household name victories on your palmares. This is in no way disrespecting his ability (saying not too much about his character if it really was him who pished in Obree's bed), but I think he made a very intelligent decision a few years ago, if a big name UK sponsor comes along, they will be more than happy to give somebody like him a job with his UK friendly palmares.
So maybe he thought about his career after racing, or maybe he just didn't fancy it over there, whatever it was, I think he made a wise decision, whether on purpose or by accident. |

I thought he gave racing abroad a try.
Didn't he have a year in Italy when he was 20/21ish then came back to ride in the UK??? |

Check out the riders he beat when he won the Circuit de Mines back in 2001 ish. Not exactly chippers......
I think John Tanner made the same choice and who can blame him. Both would have been excellent pros and won some decent races. |

Hmmmm...!!!! Interesting topic.
Discussions about ability?
Comments about character?
My view (and Grace's) :-
Superb athlete - one of the true elites.
Ability not in question look at his Palmares (domestic and International)
Excellent with young riders (although he can say it as he sees it at the end of a race - which can be straight to the point) and gives back the support he receives whenever he can.
Says he is sorry if he gets it wrong.
Gives praise and encouragement for good work.
Truthful and straight character.
Likes a laugh - and takes as good as he gives.
Very intelligent and mature.
Also - he has a lovely wife and he likes to live at home. Who can blame him I say. |
