Hasn't Pettachi won 17 this season?Or was that 17 carrer Vuelta victories? I'm going senile! |
the record cav is trying to break is wins in first season as a pro, held by pettacchi at 11 i believe. if i'm wrong blame Hugh Porter c/o Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton. |
To my knowledge that is correct. Cavendish has 10 victories so far this season, whilst the record for a neo pro is 11 victories.
p.s - Petacchi so far this season has 18. |
isn't that from a couple of years ago. |
Again, to my knowledge, no. That is his number of victories this season, although the figure includes all races, not just pro-tour. Maybe his record from a previous season was 18 but within the top tier of cycling only? |
He has won more races that anyone this year, which is amazing considering his underpar performance. Cavendish unlucky in Franco-Belge
T-Mobile (Ger)

The T-Mobile team was all ready to deliver its sprinter Mark Cavendish to his 11th win of the season in the first stage of the Circuit Franco-Belge, but bad luck that plagued the Manxman in the Tour de France returned in Belgium, and Cavendish crashed with two kilometres to go, and had to watch from behind as Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom) got his first win of the season ahead of Mark Renshaw (Credit Agricole) and Belgium's Wouter Weylandt (Quick.Step) in the bunch sprint.
T-Mobile had worked hard along with the Rabobank team to bring back the breakaway of Freddy Bichot (Agritubel) and Marco Marcato (Team L.P.R), but their work resulted in only a 9th place finish by Roger Hammond. "Mark crashed around two kilometres from the line," said T-Mobile Team sporting director Tristan Hoffman on the team's website, www.t-mobile-team.com. "Fortunately, he wasn't injured but the chance had gone."
"These things happen," continued Hoffman. "The most important things was that Mark was uninjured." The team will have few opportunities to win with the season drawing to a close next week, but Hoffman was happy with its performance despite the crash. "The team were impressive in the chase and in driving the bunch to the finish. That is great to see from the lads at the end of a long season.

Sorry to be a spoiler but I have received the following info:
Petacchi turned pro in 1996 and didn't win anything till 1998.
McEwen's official site has him turning pro in 1996 and clocking 10
wins that year. Even if you don't count the GP Fremantle, as it
probably wasn't a UCI pro race, that's more than eight.
Eddy Merckx also seems to have won nine pro races in his first pro
year, which makes Cavendish's record all the more impressive. _________________ On a clear day you can see the Statue of Liberty |

Well done to Cav. I think that will be his road win account finished and that will be a remarkable debut season.
Of course if he pulls off Tours I'm sure we will all be delighted and gobsmaked at the same time. |

I've just seen that T-Mobile have finished for the season to comply with the Pro Tour charter so no Paris-Tours. |

Freddy Maertens won 14 races in his first full pro year (1973), although he was a pro for 1 month, October, the previous year. |

I think Lombardy is 13 days away.
T-Mob have had 2 positives and Pro Tour rules apparently require you to miss the next Pro-Tour event after the last positive test/admission.
Not sure why they have to miss both Paris Tours and Lombardy though.
Either way. An unprecedented and magnificent season for Cav.
11 out of 10. |

the ethics code says that you suspend racing for a week starting at the next pro tour race. paris tours is on the 14th so they would be able to race again on the 21st but lombardy is on the 20th |
