|
|
I am sure I remember that this used to have a team award, and if this is the case, this year could be particularly interesting as British sport continues to enjoy a stunning year of success.
In a completely dispassionate, neutral, un-biased way perhaps I could help you decide how to place your vote for the best team in sport for 2007?
England Football Team
Words fail me. Never have I seen such a bunch of over-hyped, over-paid, unfit, arrogant, dumb, plebs as the England Football team. No one can even remember when they ever won anything meaningful and they hobble along - on crutches if anyone even so much as looks as their metatarsals - from one crisis to another. Their final, lack-lustre performance against Croatia said it all. I think they should pull Wembley down and use the land for a replacement for Eastway - newts or no newts. If you vote for them I shall assume you come from Liverpool or somewhere equally awful like Coventry.
England Cricket Team
I am not sure if they are better or worse than the England Football Team. Most of them make Billy Bunter look like Michael Rasmussen. I remember from school that anyone who played cricket was a complete loser and most of the decent blokes only played for a free scoff at the end of the match. And what's all that stuff they paint on their faces when the sun comes out? Poofs. Complete plonkers every one of them. But feel free to vote for them if you are on their wavelength and it brings out your feminine side.
England Rugby Union Team
OK they snatched a half decent performance from the jaws of defeat which is to their credit. But not up to their usual world-shattering standard when Jonny destroyed the Aussies with his superb drop goal in Sydney. Many people cite that as the greatest sporting moment of all time - clearly they were not in Athens to see Hoy take out three Olympic record holders in the most devastating kilo ride of all time when he brought glory to Great Britain and stuffed the French, Germans and Aussies when it mattered most - but I digress.
Great Britain Rugby League Team
As a union man I have never understood rugby league and don't intend to start now.
Great Britain Cycling Team
When I look at the Great Britain Cycling Team I think of the heroes this country has produced over the years. I think of Nelson and Churchill. I think of the Battle of Britain and fighting the enemy on the beaches. They will go down in history as Britain's finest!
We don't ponce around with broken metatarsals and cucumber sandwiches for tea!!! We have Bradley Wiggins - Olympic and World Inidividual Pursuit Champion! (I do admit that he needs a haircut and blimey those red tights at the Revolution were very kinky).
We have triple World Champion Victoria Pendleton and of course Shanaze Reade who, aloing with Vicki, took out the Dutch in the inaugural Womens' Team Sprint - "so sad to see the Dutch suffer " as I casually mentioned to the missus as she sobbed into the sink whilst cooking my dinner. We have a glorious team pursuit set-up with Bradley and Paul bringing along young Geraint and Ed (one of the most under-rated riders in the GB squad and a lovely guy).
And of course we have Chris Hoy, reigning Olympic Champion and now double World Champion in the Kilo and Keirin and, for afters, a silver medallist in the Team Sprint along with Ross Edgar and Craig Maclean. And of course Ross medalled in the keirin as did Rebecca Romero in the women's individual pursuit. Oops - nearly forgot Jamie's medal in the kilo.
What a team! How sad to see the Dutch, Belgian, Australian, German and French track squads struggle in our wake!! This is where it is at.
So please consider my un-biased neutral perspective of things and place your vote!

sort out the rugby in the poll. You can't have England Rugby Union Team or League Team when it is the England Rugby Union team and the GB rugby league team.
As good as the cycling squad are, they are not a team. They compete in (mainly) individual events. Only the TP, TS and madison could be called team events. The TP squad could legitimately be the team of the year. |

I could not sort it out - I had them separately but then ran out of options. To be honest there is no chance of either of the rugby teams winning when faced with the glorious performances of our track squad so your comment is purely academic! |

Arsenal Ladies football team.
Won all of their matches in the league, and domestic cuups. Only drew one match on their way to winning the UEFA cup. Won every competition they entered. _________________ www.kentonrc.co.uk |

Although I would of course support the GB Cycling team if nominated, I suspect that Megman is correct - the team is a bunch of competitors riding individual events, with the afrementioned exceptions (although I rather think that Chris and Ross should get an honourable mention for their teamwork in the Keirin!)

If you are lucky enough to ever get in the team hotel you would appreciate that whilst some events might be quite individual in their nature, there is no greater team ethos than the GB Cycling Team and that includes soigneurs, mechanics and everyone else. When an individual steps up for his or her event he/she has the whole team behind him/her. |

True, but the sports personality award is nothing to do with personalities either - the name of the award has little reflection on who it is awarded to!
The Team award has been presented to "Olympic Team GB" in 2000, "British Olympic men's Athletics squad" in 1989 and "British men's Swimming team" in 1975 all of which would be comparable (in terms of individuals contributing to a team ethos rather than team result) to cycling.
There have also been numerous other times when it's been awarded to a group of people that have competed individually but who's combined, but otherwise completely individual, performances contribute to a team result (e.g. "British Showjumping teams" in 1972 / 1979 / 1984, "British Olympic Modern Pentathlon team" in 1976 and the "European Ryder Cup team" in 1995 / 2002) |

Although I am partial to tottie, I am firmly in the Red and White camp of Norf London. I have however just read the result from Wednesday night's match where the Ladies followed England out of European competition by loisng their first match in eons to go out of the UEFA cup. _________________ www.kentonrc.co.uk |

Much as I hate to namedrop ( ) I was talking to Lee Mears yesterday, he is a closet fan of track racing and thought that the GB team had done brilliantly this year. So there you go. _________________ World Masters Drive HillClimb For Taureans Category C Champion 2013.

bit of a silly poll this one as you can't lump rugby league and rugby union together - They are different games and the teams had very different fortunes this year (Who are england in rugby leagur anyway - don't you mean great britain ?). And anyway League is some funny game for pigeon and whippet fanciers..... _________________ We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing - Tommy Lee |
