Got my old protractor out from the loft the other day whilst up there looking for the Xmas Tree.
Now a few years back me and missus Tricky used to go to a Pub called the Sea around Us .
Why was it called that I asked her.
Cos they reckon that it was the furthest point in the UK from any sea.
Well as I had a bit of spare time on my hands on Boxing Day I worked out that not only was the old pub in Lufbra furthest from the sea but in fact Melton Mowbray is the CENTRE of the UK as near as damn it.
Honest, you have a look. _________________ http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3094845440/tt0069704

The Ordnance Survey says this point lies just east of Church Flatts Farm, about a mile south-east of Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire |

For the sake of argument have you allowed for tidal estuaries or just drawn a line across them? For instance Goole looks well inland but gets washed by the tide every day, as does Chepstow etc. _________________ I was being chased by a police dog last week, and made the mistake of trying to escape through a little tunnel, over a see-saw and through a hoop of fire. It finally caught me as I was weaving in and out of some sticks. |

Also looking the number of bods on this forum that have had contact with Melton, and thinking of the expanding universe theory ....Tricky I reckon you could well be right

I think that is considered the Geographical centre, but maybe not the furthest from the sea. There is an impressive monument to the cyclists that died in the great war on the green there. _________________ I was being chased by a police dog last week, and made the mistake of trying to escape through a little tunnel, over a see-saw and through a hoop of fire. The BBC has always led me to believe that London village is the centre of the UK. |

Passed through the centre of the UK on Mondays ride. Obviously got held up at the lights for an eternity but was positively uplifted when I spotted the 'Portess Furnishings' store. Truly inspirational. |

Strangely enough Portess Furnishing is on Nottingham Street which I reckon with my protractor is as near as damn it THE CENTRE............but if you went down there on your bike you were cycling illegally.
