This was discussed on a late night phone in on five live the other night. A columist from the Independent was on the show saying that riding in London was perfectly safe whilst listening to music on an ipod. This sounded crazy to me and I called in and was on air saying the opposite.

If I'm alone on my bike I have headphones on. That has been the case for longer than I can remember. They are never so loud that it drowns out the sound of traffic and really don't see the issue. _________________

How do you know? You will be hearing the cars later than if you didnt have something in your ears.
It is obviously upto the individual to assess the risk but in London where I do most of my riding I need to have all the info I can get about what is around me.
If your riding in a different situation then sure the risk could be less.
Out on a country lane though I would still want to know when some dumb ass motorbike was just about to jump over the brow of a hill! _________________ Smell my cheese |

I know because I can still hear cars, grantted that that may be later, but as you say it is my own risk assessment. _________________

I guess I am asking this as I want an excuse to use 1 myself. Otherwise I start singing to myself on long rides, which must be the first signs of madness! _________________ Smell my cheese |

Use mine on the cycle track on the way to work, but not when I'm on the road. _________________ Adam

I used to be very firmly in the no earphones camp, but have been using mine sproadicaly the last few months (in London). WHat I have noticed is that I can still hear cars approaching (don't have it set to stupid volume) and that when I take it out the sound from the phones is replaced by windnoise which appears to detract from traffic sounds just as much. _________________ www.kentonrc.co.uk |

I do if riding by myself, but the roads I ride around here and quieter that most parts of the country. Don't think it makes a great deal of difference here.
Saying that I used to ride with an American when I lived in France who would ride with his i pod even during rides to the coffee shop. What a _________________ Have you got any Triple Sod? Yellow Bentines? What about some Clarky Cat? |
