The hypothetical scenario is this...
You are riding a end of season crit. Team boss wants one of the riders in your team to keep his second cat license so wants a bunch sprint. You dutifully listen and chase but eventually you find yourself in a break with the guys who are easily strong enough to win and this break aint coming back.... _________________ rutrainingtoday .co .uk

Its not necessarily snobbery, just slang.
I couldn't win a chipper, cos I'm crap(untrained). You might win a race, cos you're a great athlete( or you've been training, racing for years) But if its a race no one cares about its a Chipper. |

OK, chipper is a relative term.
But teams orders happen in every sport? Well, most sports are individual so thats wrong straight away. But more to the point, team managers for anything below elite level is risible. _________________ Rich |

Team orders up to a point. I mean, you don't chase down your teammates do you? Or you might do some extra pulls on the front of the bunch if you have a good sprinter on your team. Last weekend I had a teammate who needed some points to get his second cat, getting near the end of the season so it's now or never, if he'd held onto the bunch over the climbs then of course I'd have worked for him at the end to make sure he got the points.
But yeah LOL never heard of a team manager at club level.
If you change the question to be, "your friend needs the points, do you give up your chances in the break for him?" then you get a real question. |

if you were really concerned about getting your team mate the required points, the only way you would be in that break is with him on your wheel |

Thank the lord, someone who understands the term for what it is.
As for the question in hand...
For team manager, read the person who holds the purse string for the sponsorship of the team...well certainly negotiated the contracts for the sponsorship.
For team, read club that although faulted for many reasons (negative team tactics is a speciality) do actually try and ride as a team unit.
The rider in question... never going to get points in the race on Saturday. I can't think of a situation Smudge's lot that would have allowed the chap in queston to score decent points at this event. Not being nasty, its just the strengths required to achieve on the terrain and against the competition are not there.
A break without a certain percentage of the usual suspects was not going to work, and no one wants that break with the usual suspects to work, so the only reason it does work is because the pressure is sufficient to allow the stranglehold of the riders (and teams) in question to force it off the front.... The chap in question won't make this break without a head start, and trying to protect him for the sprint was the wron thing to do.
Maybe yu should have tried sending him up the road in an early move and hope that the selection came over to him.
And once in the break, I think we both know that if you had sat on, life would have become very unpleasant for all concerned, and you wouldn't have got away with it. and the move still wouldn't be caught...if you'd gone back to the bunch you would not have chased us down as yuo'd not get any help in the chase and the numbers don' add up for your team to have made the catch.
So there.
So in summary... find a 2/3/4 crit and get your man to get his points there. Why does he struggle to keep his second? He is handy enough. |
